The Secretariat of the WTO is seeking to fill a position of Translator in the English Translation Section of the Languages, Documentation and Information Management Division.

General Functions

Reporting to the Chief of Section, the incumbent is expected to undertake the following functions:

1. Subject to such revision as may be necessary, translate the full range of documents received by the Section into English from the two other official languages of the WTO, Spanish and French.

2. Translate without revision texts of a general or routine character not involving complex, technical or sensitive matters.

3. Begin revising simple translations by junior staff. The incumbent may be called upon to integrate and revise such texts translated or prepared by peers or non-language staff.

4. Conduct research in the fields of economics and law in order to understand all aspects of particular substantive issues and make adequate use of appropriate technical concepts and terminology.

5. Prepare multilingual terminology records, subject to revision.

6. Keep abreast of developments in the field of translation support tools and apply them in order to improve quality and shorten translation deadlines.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

Advanced university degree or equivalent professional qualification in translation, languages, economics or law is required. Alternatively a basic university degree in the aforementioned disciplines combined with a professional qualification in translation or languages may be considered.
Knowledge and skills:

Good background knowledge of international trade, economics and legal affairs.
Ability to translate quickly, accurately and in an appropriate style texts dealing with a wide variety of subjects.

Ability to work with computer-assisted translation tools.

The following interpersonal capabilities are required: persuade others to a point of view using facts; face and cope with conflict situations with colleagues; work as a member of a team, relating to others, while working independently to achieve his/her objectives; relate to and build relationships with colleagues; communicate information in a clear way and understand information.
Work Experience:

A minimum of 500 days' translation experience gained within an international organization or, alternatively, at least 1,000 days' or five to six years' translation experience purely within a national context.
Languages:

A perfect command of English and a thorough knowledge of French and Spanish are essential.
Additional Information:

The position may be offered at a lower grade if the selected candidate does not fully meet all the required qualifications.

Candidates not selected whose performance in the selection process nevertheless shows them to be suitable for a similar position may be kept on a roster for up to 12 months, and may subsequently be called upon as and when the need arises for additional resources.
